Why are my dentures loose?

Why are my dentures loose?

It's important that your dentures fit securely on your gums. However, under certain circumstances they can become loose and stop fitting as well as they did when you first got them.

It's a fact that loose dentures are quite a common problem, but there are some things you can do to help keep your dentures secure and comfortable.

Why might dentures become loose?

Dentures can become loose for a variety of reasons. Bone resorption is the most common reason. Bone resorption is when your gums begin to shrink because they no longer need to support your teeth.

In order to help prevent bone resorption, you should try to use your jaws as much as possible. Doing things like chewing solid foods should help to keep your gums healthy and strong. In fact, eating a nutritious, balanced diet is essential in preventing resorption.

Regular day-to-day wear is another common reason that dentures become loose. Practicing good denture care, including taking your dentures out at night, can help to minimize this.

How can I tell if I’ve got loose dentures?

There are a number of signs that may indicate that you have loose dentures such as: finding that they tend to slip when you speak or eat, hearing a clicking sound when you speak, or even some slight discomfort. Over time, you could even develop mouth sores and have a hard time eating.

If you notice any of these signs, please come visit your dentist at Guildford Dental in Surrey as soon as possible. We might prescribe a denture adhesive, or your dentures may need to be repaired or replaced.
